Jesus meets his mother

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because, by your holy cross,
you have redeemed the world

Reading
Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Luke 2:34-35)

Meditation
Mary had brought up her son through many hardships, and cared for him as a loving mother. Now she saw him being led to his death at a little over 30 years of age. Was this really what he had meant when when he said, “Did you not know that I must be busy with my Father’s arrairs?” Certainly this was the sword that Simeon had predicted would pierce her soul.

But Mary, unlike most of the disciples, did not desert her son in his time of need, but stood by him to the end. Let us ask that we too may have faith like Mary, to stand by Jesus whatever the cost.

Lord Jesus,
we often lack faith in you
Lord, have mercy
Christ have mercy

Lord Jesus,
we often fail to trust in you.
Lord, have mercy
Christ have mercy

Lord Jesus,
help us to love you as Mary did.
Lord, have mercy
Christ have mercy

Holy God
Holy Mighty One
Holy Immortal One
have mercy on us and on the whole world.
