The Railway Navvies of Settle: the end of the line – the story of the navvies who gave their lives to build the Settle and Carlisle railway.
This book has been funded by the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line, the Settle and Carlisle Railway Trust and Stories in Stone.
Holy Ascension Church is one of two churches selected along the Settle-Carlisle railway line to house identical plaques dedicated to the memory of the navvies who died in accidents during the building of the railway between Settle and Dent.
The final resting place for many of the navvies was the ‘Ancient’ graveyard. Unfortunately many of the navvies were buried in unmarked graves and inefficient records mean that the record of navvy burials is not complete.
The book is available for £3 from the church and the money generated from the book will be used to support local charities.
